I am James, I am an artist here is my other work www.jamesabellart.com. I like to mix traditional techniques with new technologies. I am from Scotland and it is a great privilege and opportunity to be the artist in residence here at the EchoFab Fablab for the next few weeks. As with all creative work, I am not sure what the final result will be. Recently, I have been looking for somewhere to use a workshop with new technologies, this FabLab is an exact match.
Day one has been a ‘get to know’ the facilities day. Everybody is very helpful. Today, I experimented with the useful technologies in the EchoLab. I used a 3d mesh that I made some time ago of an ‘Adamski UFO’ a famous flying saucer hoax and an image of it also appeared on the rock band The Pixies 1989 Doolittle Album art! Something I remember from my childhood days.
Other experiments included me getting to grips with a 3d scanner and preparing an abstract clay model to scan into 3d and to scale up using horizontal layers on the laser cutter.
At the moment, I want to concentrate on is static and fluid in architectonic compositions. I make a lot of images inspired by architectural space. I incorporate the static elements of the buildings with fluid line work with a traditional pen or pencil to show the people, cars, movement etc. I like to reflect the energy, life, excitement and perhaps even the detachment we feel while in our cities. I want to use these weeks at the EchoFab Fablab to develop this idea with sculptural shapes that will incorporate interaction, sounds, lights. Watch this space for the next days. Who knows what the results will be, that is the exciting this when we mix art and technology…
